Installing VS2010 beta 2 (Ultimate) on a production machine with VS2008 and Silverlight 3 SDK generates an error during setup.

The setup log reports the following:

[10/20/09,11:36:46] Microsoft Silverlight 3 SDK: [2] Setup detection logic indicates that this component is NOT installed, but MSI indicates that it IS already installed. This is usually caused by an incompatible previous version being installed on the system. Check in Add Remove Programs and uninstall any previous versions of Microsoft Silverlight 3 SDK.

[10/20/09,11:36:46] Microsoft Silverlight 3 SDK: [2] WARNING! Setup Failed for optional component Microsoft Silverlight 3 SDK. MSI returned error code 1603

I also encountered this error when installing VS2010 beta 2 (Pro) on both a 64bit/Windows 7 RC machine and a 32bit/Windows XP machine, both of which had VS2008 and Silverlight 3 SDK already installed.

Just would like to update that after this I did managed to create a new silverlight project, and convert an existent one with no issues on VS2010. Using VS2008 I didnt had any problems also.

My experience was the same as Joao's. I assumed the problem was that I already had Silverlight 3 installed so I just went ahead and tried to use Silverlight 3 in VS2010. I created a Silverlight 3 project and converted two I created with VS2008 without having any issues.

My experience was the same.
Same error indicating that Silverlight SDK is already installed even if the setup logic indicates that it is NOT installed.
To resolve this issue I have uninstalled the Silverlight 3 SDK and tried to install VS 2010 again.
The setup finished without errors.
Now the VS IDE hangs opening and does not work. I'm trying now to repair the installation...
Frustrated ... 4 times installed with errors, now it's installed but does not work...

Now I have an issue loading the IDE:

SetSite failed for package [Visual Studio Component Model Host Package]
SetSite failed for package [Microsoft.VisualStudio.Editor.Implementation.EditorPackage, Microsoft.VisualStudio.Editor.Implementation, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a]

The IDE opens and then, after few seconds, appear a Messagebox indicating the errors.

Dredy : Perhaps you should open a new bug because I dont think your problem is directly related to this Setup error message. Its perhaps related with the step you took to uninstall the SDK. If you didnt uninstall the SDK perhaps you would not had this problem. Have you tried to install the SL 3 SDK again to see if that fixes your problem?

Sorry for this continued "apparently O.T."

Joao, i've opened a new bug just 2 minutes after my report here.
I did not try to reinstall the Silverlight 3 SDK because i did not correlate (actually I don't know what is) the "Visual Studio Component Model Host Package" with silverlight.
Searched about it even in Bing/Google/MSDN: the unique related result is my just opened bug (very fast indexed by Bing and Google ...)
Any idea about what is it?

I had this problem. Removed the Silverlight 3 SDK and reinstall everything again. The install is successful, but now cannot develop Web Applications. Trying to open aspx files for example giving me error like "The operation cannot be completed". I don't know how to fix this issue so Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 would work again. Anyone has any ideas or workarounds?

I have a Windows 7 RC machine (Build 7127) with VS2010 B1 uninstalled according to readme, and I encountered this conflict. I did have Silverlight 3 SDK still installed so I removed it, and I reinstalled it from the VS2010 B2 dristribution media (drive:\wcu\silverlight\siilverlight_sdk.msi) prior to opening VS for the first time. As far as i can tell, everything seems to be working just fine for me now.

Thank you for your feedback.

This is a known issue that will be fixed in a later release of the Silverlight SDK. The easiest way to resolve your issue is to remove any previous install of the Silverlight 3 SDK and reinstall the Silvelright 3 SDK only. You don't need to attempt a reinstall/repair of VS. You can find the latest Silverlight 3 SDK here --> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1EA49236-0DE7-41B1-81C8-A126FF39975B&displaylang=en

I'm resolving this issue as a duplicate. Please feel free to reactivate if this doesn't solve your issue.

Thanks
